On 27 January 2026, CurrENT organized an online workshop to present the results of its recent assessment on Dynamic Line Rating Adoption in Europe. The goal of the workshop was to discuss the benefits of this Grid Enhancing Technology, the importance of data transparency to monitor its adoption and the role of the European regulatory framework to promote it.

Recap

Brian Berry, Product Manager at Heimdall Power, a member of CurrENT Europe, showcased the result of CurrENT’s DLR Adoption map. He highlighted why this exercise was important for the future, emphasizing the necessity for more data transparency to monitor the performance of our girds.

His presentation was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Layla Sawyer, Secretary General of CurrENT Europe, featuring key experts of the sector.

Victor le Maire, planning engineer at Elia, the Belgian TSO, highlighted the benefits of DLR to reduce congestion in transmission lines as well as to complement with other Innovative Grid Technologies such as HTLS conductors. Using DLR solutions alleviates the pressure on grids that result from the work to install HTLS conductors.

Špela Maver, policy officer on energy Infrastructure in ACER’s Energy System Needs Department, presented ACER’s work on the development of Smart Grid KPIs to monitor the application of Grid Enhancing Technologies. She highlighted the importance of data transparency to understand where these solutions are implemented and the benefits they deliver. She pointed out that ACER, just like CurrENT, is looking into the deployment of DLR and its capacity gains and sees CurrENT’s assessment as a good starting point.

Zdeněk Hruška, convenor of ENTSO-E’s TYNDP steering group, provided insights on how ENTSO-E considers Grid Enhancing Technologies like Dynamic Line Rating as part of long-term planning and the perspectives for it in the future. He highlighted the role that Dynamic Line Rating can play for operations to address system needs, in particular to combine DLR with tools that can increase renewables integration in the system, demonstrating the complementary values of this technology.

Zuzana Sádlová, policy officer at DG ENER in the unit in charge of infrastructure and regional cooperation gave insights on the Commission’s work related to promoting the adoption of Dynamic Line Rating and other similar technologies. She underlined that these technologies are underutilized in Europe despite the roles they can play to reduce development needs, and therefore, costs for consumers. She showcased the growing focus of the Commission on these solutions to optimize grids. She highlighted the important work of the European Commission on this topic as part of the Grids Package and subsequent proposals.
