CurrENT responded to the Consultation on the Electrification Action Plan

CurrENT has responded to the European Commission’s consultation on the Electrification Action Plan, stressing that Europe’s electrification goals can only be met if electricity grids are ready to support them. The response highlights that insufficient grid capacity, high connection delays, and administrative barriers remain major obstacles across all sectors.

CurrENT calls for adapting the legislative framework towards 2030, increasing public financing, and introducing output-based incentives to help system operators optimise existing grids. CurrENT also supports an EU electrification target, clearer decarbonisation pathways, and fairer energy taxation in favour of electricity.

Flexibility and storage will be essential, but many solutions cannot be deployed because of grid constraints, technical barriers, and limited digitalisation. CurrENT urges the EU to accelerate digitalisation, improve interoperability, and ensure easier access to flexibility markets.

Across transport, buildings, and industry, the message is consistent: electrification is limited by the grid’s ability to deliver power. CurrENT recommends prioritising innovative grid technologies that expand capacity faster and at lower cost, enabling Europe to electrify efficiently while supporting its climate and competitiveness goals.
